Ventura is located on the California coast in Ventura County. The area was inhabited by the Chumash people for thousands of years before being colonized by Spain in the 1700s. Ventura was later part of Mexico until California became a state. Ventura incorporated in 1866 and grew as an important agricultural and oil boomtown.
Geography
Ventura spans over 32 square miles between the Pacific Ocean and protected hillsides and canyons. The climate is Mediterranean featuring warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Ventura's coastal setting makes it popular for surfing, boating, and fishing.
Population
As of 2021 Ventura had a population of 110,000 residents. It's the most populous city in Ventura County. The population is predominantly white and Latino. Ventura has a large senior population with 15% over age 65.
Economy
Major employers in Ventura include County and City government, hospitals, oil companies, Naval Base Ventura County, and Patagonia. Agriculture and tourism centered around the downtown and harbor also play a key role. Popular events include the Ventura County Fair and Ventura Music Festival.
