Thousand Oaks is a city located in the county of Ventura in the U.S. state of California. Its population at the 2010 census was 126,683. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 126,310 inhabitants.

The city was created 60 years ago in 1963.

Thousand Oaks is a city situated in southeastern Ventura County, California, halfway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. With over 127,000 residents, it is the second-largest city in Ventura County.

History

The area was originally inhabited by the Chumash people. In the 1800s, Spanish settlers established ranchos like the Rancho El Conejo land grant. The name “Thousand Oaks” comes from the many oak trees native to the region.

Thousand Oaks officially incorporated in 1964, one of the first master-planned communities in the US. Much of its growth coincided with the expansion of Los Angeles and rise of suburban living.

Today it has established itself as an affluent community with excellent schools, services, and shopping.

Economy

The city has a strong high-tech and biotech presence, with companies like Amgen, Teledyne Technologies, and SAGE Publications headquartered here. It also has a regional healthcare hub centered around Los Robles Hospital.

Other major employers are the Conejo Valley Unified School District, Bank of America, Verizon Wireless, and Baxter International. The city has significantly higher household incomes than much of California.

Things to Do

Outdoor activities abound, with hiking at Wildwood Regional Park or biking along the Conejo Valley Bike Trail. Golfers enjoy North Ranch Country Club and other local courses.

The 1,800-seat Civic Arts Plaza is a thriving performing arts center. Families enjoy attractions like the Stagecoach Inn Museum and the Gardens of the World botanic garden.
