San Marcos is a city located in the county of San Diego in the U.S. state of California. Its population at the 2010 census was 83,781 and a population density of 944 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 97,477 inhabitants.
The city was created 216 years ago in 1807.
San Marcos is a suburban city in northern San Diego County. It was incorporated in 1963 and has steadily grown into a popular residential community. San Marcos is home to California State University San Marcos, which was established in 1989.
Geography
San Marcos is located just inland of the Pacific Ocean beaches, near Escondido and Encinitas. It spans over 24 square miles at the base of hills and valleys. The climate is generally mild and dry.
Demographics
As of 2010, San Marcos had over 97,000 residents. The population is racially diverse with a large Latino and Asian presence. Over one quarter of residents are under age 18. The median household income is $73,371.
Economy
San Marcos has a business-friendly environment. Major employers include California State University, the Vista Unified School District, and Hunter Industries. There are several business parks and shopping centers located off the 78 Freeway.
