Poway is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The unincorporated community became a city on December 1, 1980. Poway's rural roots influenced its motto "The City in the Country". As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 49,701.
As of 2019, the city has an estimated population of 50,029 according to the U.S. Census Bureau and it covers an area of 101.4 square kilometres (39 sq mi). Poway is considered part of the East County region of San Diego County along with Carlsbad and Escondido. The city is located at [157 m] elevation and lies near both the Pacific Ocean and within sight of Mount Woodson (5,100 feet [1,554 m]).
It lies about 10 miles (16 km) north of downtown San Diego and about 5 miles (8 km) northeast of San Diego International Airport (SAN). It is bordered by other unincorporated communities of San Diego County: Rancho Peñasquitos to the south; Sabre Springs to the southwest; Scripps Ranch to the west; and Scripps Ranches to the northwest and east (although this area is planned as future annexed land by Poway).
The City of Poway has a Council-Manager form of government with a Mayor and six Councilmembers elected by district who serve four year terms and run every two years on even years. In addition to serving as the legislative body for the city, they also serve as members of various boards and commissions affecting their constituents directly or indirectly such as the Planning Commission (3 members), Board of Adjustment (3 members), Airport Authority (3 members), Library Board (3 members), Economic Development
