The area that became West Valley City was originally dry, empty space when Mormon pioneers arrived in 1847. Farmers settled the land over time and small communities formed.
West Valley City itself was incorporated in 1980 as a way to unite the unincorporated neighborhoods of Hunter, Granger, and Redwood. It became Utah’s second largest city during rapid growth in the 1980s.
