Ramapo is a town in Rockland County, New York. The area was originally inhabited by the Munsee people before Dutch settlers arrived in the 1600s.
In 1774, the region was renamed New Hempstead. It became part of the town of Haverstraw in 1788. Finally, in 1829, Ramapo became its own town.
The town grew slowly initially. However, the construction of the Erie Railroad in 1841 brought industry and development to Ramapo. The town became an important railroad and mining hub.
