The city was created 68 years ago in 1955.

History

The area where Pembroke Pines now sits was originally swampland. In the late 1950s, local developer J.C. Pines purchased land and constructed the Village of Pembroke Pines, designed as an affordable suburban community. More rapid growth occurred in the late 20th century. Pembroke Pines was officially incorporated as a city in 1960.

Due to its affordable suburban neighborhoods, Pembroke Pines has become one of the most ethnically diverse cities in South Florida. The population is predominantly white and Hispanic or Latino, with notable African American, Caribbean, and Asian American communities as well.
