Hidalgo County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 774,769 and a population density of 87 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 875,200 inhabitants. Its county seat is Lordsburg. The county was created 105 years ago in 1919.
Hidalgo County is located in southern Texas along the Rio Grande River and border with Mexico. The county was established in 1852 from parts of Cameron County and Starr County. It was named for the town of Hidalgo.
The original county seat was Edinburgh, but this was later moved to Edinburg in 1908. The town was renamed to Edinburg shortly after being established in the early 1900s as a railroad stop.
