Gallatin, Tennessee is a city in and the county seat of Sumner County, Tennessee. The population was 30,278 at the 2010 census and 44,431 at the 2020 census. Named for United States Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin, the city was established on the Cumberland River and made the county seat of Sumner County in 1802.
Gallatin's downtown area is home to a number of historic buildings and entertainment venues, including the Sumner County Courthouse (1820), First National Bank (1908), Sumner County Jail (1900), Uptown Theater (1928), Gallatin City Hall (1937) and several churches. The city is also home to a number of restaurants, shops and galleries as well as a full-service hospital.
The Gallatin School District operates three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school within the city. Several private schools are also located in Gallatin including Center Grove Christian Academy (K-12) and St. Michael Catholic School (K-8).
Gallatin is home to several manufacturing plants, including those of Calsonic Kansei North America Inc., Federal Mogul Corp., HarbisonWalker Refrigeration Systems LLC (formerly Munters USA Corp.), Ingles Markets Inc., LafargeHolcim (formerly RockTenn LLC), Newell Brands Inc., and Toyota Industries Corporation (TIC).
The city's economy also relies on tourism related to nearby historic sites such as Belle Meade Plantation and The Hermitage—home of President Andrew Jackson—and attractions such as Great Smoky Mountains National Park and The Parthenon in Nashville.
Gallatin has been named America's Best City by two national publications: Livability Magazine in 2012 and Money Magazine in 2015; it was also named one of America's 100 Greenest Cities by Popular Science Magazine in 2017
