Federal Way is a city located in the county of King in the U.S. state of Washington. Its population at the 2010 census was 89,306. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 96,307 inhabitants.

The city was created 34 years ago in 1989.

Federal Way is located in King County, Washington. It was incorporated in 1990 and gets its name from Federal Highway U.S. 99 which runs through the city. Prior to incorporation, Federal Way was referred to as an unincorporated urban area.

Demographics

As of 2019, Federal Way had a population of 97,044 residents, making it the 8th largest city in Washington state. The population is highly diverse with over 46% being people of color. There are sizable Asian, Hispanic and African American populations.

Economy

Major employers in Federal Way include Weyerhaeuser, World Vision and Seattle Children's Hospital. The city also has a bustling retail sector with The Commons at Federal Way mall, surrounding shopping centers and auto dealerships.

Geography

Federal Way spans 35 square miles in the Puget Sound lowlands. It is bordered by Kent to the north, Tacoma to the west, and unincorporated King County to the east. The terrain is relatively flat with wetlands, streams and lakes.

Government

Federal Way has a Council-Manager form of government with 7 elected city council members and an appointed city manager. Federal Way's current Mayor is Jim Ferrell who was elected in 2013. The city has its own police and fire departments.

Education

The Federal Way Public School District serves over 22,000 students in the city. Federal Way is also home to Highline College, which has two campuses and enrollment of around 10,000 students annually.
