Fairbanks North Star Borough is a county located in the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 97,581 and a population density of 5 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 95,651 inhabitants. Its county seat is Fairbanks. The county was created 60 years ago in 1963.
Fairbanks is located in the interior region of Alaska on the banks of the Chena River. It was founded in 1901 as a result of a gold rush in the area and was named after Charles W. Fairbanks, a Senator at the time. As gold mining declined, Fairbanks evolved into a central hub and supply point, especially during WWII construction of the Alaska Highway.
It remains an important economic center today with the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and Fort Wainwright Army Base both located nearby.
