Andover's history is tied to its location on the way to other places; it was first settled because it was on a trail from Charlestown to Haverhill and the Connecticut River valley, and later because it was on a stagecoach route from Boston to Worcester. Andovers were among those who set out from Charlestown on April 18, 1643 to bring Reverend George Phillips as their minister; he had been banned from Massachusetts for his Puritan views.
In 1812, during the War of 1812, British soldiers went through Andover on their way to Concord and Lexington where they burned homes and other buildings before being turned back at Concord Bridge and in Lincoln by local militia groups organized by Daniel Webster among others.
