The Algeria ( Arabic : الجزائر, al-Jazā'ir, ; Tamazight and Algerian Arabic : Dzayer, Djazaïr or Ldzayer; in Tifinagh ⵍ ⵣ ⵣ ⴰ ⵢ ⴻ ⵔ), in long form the Democratic Republic of Algeria People's abbreviated RADP, in Arabic الجمهورية الجزائرية الديمقراطية الشعبية, is a State of North Africa as part of the Maghreb. Its capital, Algiers, is located north on the coast Mediterranean. With an area of 2,381,741 square kilometers, is both the largest country of Africa, the Arab world and the Mediterranean basin. It shares a total of over 6,385 km of land borders, including the Tunisian north-east, Libya to the east, Niger and Mali to the south, Mauritania and the non-autonomous territory of Western Sahara southwest, and finally Morocco in the west. After one hundred thirty-two years of French colonization, Algeria gained its independence on 5 July 1962 at the end of a long and costly war, and by the self-determination referendum of 1 July 1962 .
