Wayne County was formed in 1817 from parts of Hickman and Humphreys Counties, and it was named for General Anthony Wayne.
The first recorded settlers were John and Martha Smith who arrived from Kentucky in 1807. They were followed by James Blevins and his family who settled on the south bank of Bear Creek in what is now Collinwood.
The county has historically been agricultural, but it has seen an increase in manufacturing jobs since 1990 due to its proximity to Interstate 40.
Wayne County is also home to Columbia State Community College's Wayne County campus which opened in 1985 as the first two-year public college in West Tennessee and serves over 4500 students annually with more than 50 degree and certificate programs at their main campus and satellite campuses across West Tennessee."
