Waltham is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States, and was an early center for the labor movement as well as a major contributor to the American Industrial Revolution. The city is best known as the birthplace of the watch industry in America.

The name Waltham comes from the Anglo-Saxon "Weald" or "Wealdtam," meaning forest settlement. In 1629, Thomas Hooker led a group of settlers from Newtowne (now Cambridge) to establish an outpost there. Waltham was first settled in 1645 as part of Cambridge.

In 1844, the land now occupied by Wellesley College was purchased by Henry Fowle Durant, who also constructed a factory to manufacture watches on the site. The factory employed many women and immigrants who worked long hours for low wages in poor conditions. In response, local women formed the Lowell Female Labor Reform Association and petitioned for safer working conditions and higher wages. In 1874, they succeeded in persuading the Massachusetts legislature to force Durant to improve conditions in his factories. This was one of the first times that organized labor had been successful at improving working conditions without striking.
