Waller County is located in southeastern Texas, northwest of Houston. As of the 2020 census, the population was 57,187 making it the 39th most populous county in Texas. The county seat is Hempstead.
History
Early days
Waller County was established in 1873 and named after Texas Revolution leader Edwin Waller. Hempstead became the county seat in 1874. The economy was based on ranching and agriculture.
20th century growth
The county transitioned to a more industrial economy in the 1900s, focused on oil, gas, and manufacturing. The population grew with suburban sprawl from Houston.

Oil and gas
Oil and natural gas extraction and production is a major industry. There are thousands of wells and extensive pipeline infrastructure.
Manufacturing
Other important economic activities include food processing, furniture manufacturing, and metal fabrication. Many firms are located in the city of Brookshire.
