After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 72,164 inhabitants. Its county seat is Huntsville. The county was created 178 years ago in 1846.

History
Early days
Walker County was established in 1846 following Texas' annexation by the United States. It was named after Samuel Hamilton Walker, a Texas Ranger captain.
Prison establishment
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice was established in Huntsville in 1849. This brought substantial growth and economic development.
Later events
Sam Houston State University opened in 1879, further expanding Huntsville's importance.
