History

Early days

The county was established in 1848 and named after Isaac Van Zandt, a member of the Congress of the Republic of Texas. Canton became the county seat in 1850.

Recent trends

The population has increased over the last few decades as the Dallas-Fort Worth metro expanded. Canton's commerce has grown.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing is a major employer, with companies producing trailers, steel products, and food processing. Many factories are located in Grand Saline, which has an industrial park.
