History
Early history
The county was established in 1885 and named after the Val Verde battlefield in the Civil War. Del Rio was founded that year and quickly became the county seat.
20th century
The economy was driven by agriculture and ranching early on. In the 1950s, Laughlin Air Force Base opened, bringing growth.
