Urbandale is a city located in the county of Polk in the U.S. state of Iowa. Its population at the 2010 census was 39,463 and a population density of 678 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 44,650 inhabitants.
The city was created 107 years ago in 1917.
Urbandale is a city in Polk and Dallas counties, Iowa. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the city population was 45,580. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Urbandale was incorporated on April 12, 1960 by combining the neighboring communities of Bethany and Unionville. Although it was unincorporated at the time, Unionville had been founded in 1882. The name "Urbandale" was invented by combining the names of two localities: Urbandale Township and John Deere's farm implement company (Deere & Company).
Urbandale was created by a merger of several smaller communities: Bradford Junction, College Park and Highland Park. Those three cities had been in existence since at least 1882. Urbandale itself was incorporated on March 4, 1956 after residents who lived in those three communities put together petitions for incorporation with over 200 signatures each.
The city is home to several parks and trails, including the Stonebridge Golf Course, which has hosted various PGA tournaments over the years; and Rotary Park, which features a playground and picnic area as well as a walking trail through wooded areas along the Raccoon River that runs through town.
There are also four elementary schools: Hillside Elementary School (grades K-2), Timberline Elementary School (grades 3-4), Urbandale Elementary School (grades 5-6) and Meadowbrook Elementary School (grades 7-8).
