History

Temecula was founded in the 1800s as a ranching and wheat farming community. The name comes from the Luiseño Native American word for “place of the sun”.

Population growth exploded in the late 20th century as inland Southern California developed. Affordable homes and wineries made Temecula an appealing destination. It incorporated as a city in 1989.

Today it balances a thriving tourism scene with growing employment base and amenities.
