The city of Southaven was founded in 1958 by Robert W. Taylor and his wife, Sandra. The Taylors were originally from Mississippi and moved to the Memphis area after falling in love with the area during a vacation to nearby Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

The Taylors purchased several hundred acres of land from the estate of the late Colonel A.B.C. Wharton, who had been a successful cotton farmer and cattleman prior to his death in 1955 at age 92. The Taylors settled in Southaven because they felt it was an ideal location for their plans to build a new community that welcomed people from all backgrounds and economic levels.
