Socorro's history dates back to 1659 when it was established as an outpost by Juan de Ugalde. The name Socorro comes from Spanish meaning "to help," or "assistance." In 1749, Franciscan priests established Mission Nuestra Señora de Perpetuo Socorro within this area that later became known as Old Socorro. The Spanish built a presidio to protect their supply line to Mexico City with an acequia (irrigation ditch) that stretched across present-day New Mexico and Arizona.
In 1881, a new community was established across the Rio Grande from Old Socorro called Nuevo Socorro (New Socorro). This community continued to grow until 1898 when American troops occupied both sides of the border and renamed this community after Henry Clay Hooker (1842–1910), who was then President of The Rock Island Railroad Company.
There are plenty of places to explore in Socorro—the Rio Grande, the riverbeds, and even some caves that were used by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in this area. And if you like taking pictures, there are plenty of opportunities for that as well!
One thing we love about Socorro is that it's close enough to El Paso that locals can easily visit there often (and vice versa), but far enough away that it feels more like a small town than an urban area.
