Rusk County is located in northeastern Texas near the Louisiana border. As of the 2020 census, the population was 54,406 making it the 40th most populous county in Texas. The county seat is Henderson.
History
Early days
Rusk County was established in 1843 under the Republic of Texas. It was named for Thomas Jefferson Rusk, a secretary of war. Henderson was designated the county seat in 1844.
Growth
The county economy was initially based on cotton cultivation and livestock ranching. In the 1930s, oil discoveries brought industrial growth.
