Rose Hill is an unincorporated community located in Lee County, Virginia. It lies near the Cumberland Gap and the border of Kentucky.
The community was founded in the late 18th century by pioneer settlers. In 1785, Reverend Charles Cummings established the first school and church in the area known as Ewing's Valley.
In 1835, the community name changed to Rose Hill likely after Dr. John Rose who operated a spa there. The economy was largely agricultural.
In 1883, the Powell Valley Railroad reached Rose Hill, stimulating the timber and coal mining industries. The town grew into a center of commerce.
