Kingston is the largest city and county seat of Roane County. It was established in 1799 due to its strategic location along the river. Historic sites include the Lenoir Museum, Kingston Flyer steam train, and Fort Southwest Point overlooking the river confluence.
Harriman is a riverfront industrial city founded in 1891. It was built as a company town for the East Tennessee Land Company. Harriman has memorials dedicated to the city's pioneering founders and laborers. Visitors enjoy outdoor recreation along the river.
