Redwood City is a city located in the county of San Mateo in the U.S. state of California. Its population at the 2010 census was 76,815. After 9 years in 2019 city had an estimated population of 85,925 inhabitants.

The city was created 157 years ago in 1867.

Redwood City is a city on the San Francisco Peninsula in Northern California's Bay Area, approximately 27 miles south of San Francisco, and 24 miles northwest of San Jose. It is located between San Carlos to the north and Menlo Park to the south. Redwood City's history spans its earliest inhabitation by the Ohlone people to being a port for lumber and other goods.

The city's history spans its earliest inhabitation by the Ohlone people to its early days as a port for lumber and other goods. In 1851, it became part of the state of California's boundaries when gold was discovered here.

In 1851, the first sawmill was established in the area now known as Redwood City, according to the California History Society. The city was incorporated in 1867 and became a charter city in 1903, with land that was once part of Belmont Township (now West Menlo Park). In 1851, James M. Smith bought for $50,000 from the Rancho Nuevo Mexican land grant estate of Juan Jose Dominguez Rancho Rincon de Los Esteros del Sur (Rancho Rincón de los Esteros del Sur). In 1854 he erected a wharf at Redwood City on San Francisco Bay where seaside travelers could board ferries to San Francisco.

Redwood City is home to large corporations such as Oracle Corporation and Electronic Arts, as well as small businesses such as Togos Nursery & Garden Center and Berkeley Systems' flagship store. Though it is a small city by area, Redwood City has a very high density rate at 4,900 residents per square mile (1,900/km²),
