Redland is an unincorporated community located in Montgomery County, Maryland, around 12 miles north of Washington D.C. While small, Redland has a rich history and charming local character.
Early History
Redland originated in the mid 19th century and was initially known as Redlands. The area was predominantly farmland, with brickmaking also prominent due to the local clay soil. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad established a depot in Redland in 1873 to support the growing agricultural community.
By the early 20th century, Redland developed into a small rural town with general stores, blacksmith shops, taverns and churches to serve local farmers.
Redland Today
While no longer incorporated, present-day Redland retains its historic small town feel. Local features include:
