Noble County was formed in 1836 from portions of Whitley and DeKalb Counties and named for John Noble, who was killed at the Battle of Tippecanoe during the War of 1812. In 1837, the county seat was established at Albion, which had been laid out by Noble's father-in-law, Judge Jesse Jennings.
The first courthouse was built on land donated by Judge Jennings and his wife Mary Noble Jennings. It was replaced by a new structure in 1854 with bricks made on site by convicts from nearby prison farms; this building remained in use until it was replaced by a new courthouse in 1926, which itself was replaced in 1992 by a modern facility with attached jail facilities and sheriff's residence.
