New Albany is a city in Floyd County, Indiana, United States, situated along the Ohio River, opposite Louisville, Kentucky. The population was 36,372 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Floyd County.
The city was founded in 1812 by James Taylor Jr., who was then serving as Indiana's territorial governor. It was named after New Albany, Pennsylvania—a port town on the Ohio River that served as a major gateway for early settlers to Kentucky and Tennessee. Originally intended to be a major commercial hub like its East Coast namesake, New York City eventually became surpassed by Cincinnati and Louisville in regional economic importance by the end of the 19th century.
In 1815 James Taylor Jr.'s son William H. Taylor founded Madison College which became Transylvania University and now has over 16,000 students per year while also being one of the top 100 research universities in the nation. In 1840 John Curd (who would later become Governor of Indiana) founded what would become Indiana Normal School (now Indiana State University) in downtown New Albany across from Madison College (now Transylvania University). In 1865 New Albany officially incorporated as a city.
The city has developed as a major industrial center in Kentucky since the 1950s. It is home to several major manufacturing plants operated by companies such as General Electric and Terex and has been designated a clean industrial site (the only one in Indiana).
