History of Nacogdoches County
Nacogdoches County has a long and rich history. It was one of the earliest European settlements in Texas, founded as a Spanish mission in 1716. Nacogdoches was a hub for both the Spanish and French during their 18th century battles over the region.
In 1836, Nacogdoches played a role in the Texas Revolution as many local citizens joined the cause. The county was officially established that same year under the new Republic of Texas.
