The city was created 146 years ago in 1877.
The Mesquite area was first settled by the Van Der Stucken family in the early 1840s. By the late 1800s, small communities had formed around farmland and the Texas & Pacific Railway. Mesquite was officially established in 1887 and saw growth as a rural farming hub for cotton, corn, and cattle.
Rapid suburban expansion came after World War II with affordable housing attracting middle class families. Mesquite benefited from its proximity to Dallas and connection to highways like I-30. This drove huge population and economic growth through the 1970s.
