McDonald is a borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. The borough was first settled in 1817 and was incorporated in 1899. The borough was named after Major Alexander McDonald, the railroad director who helped construct the railroad line through the town in 1859.
The railroad greatly contributed to the growth of McDonald. The railroad enabled the transportation of coal and other goods, bringing business and industry to McDonald. Coal mining became a major industry as coal deposits were discovered and mined starting in the 1870s. By the early 1900s, McDonald had become an important railroad and coal center in Washington County. The railroad and coal mining fueled McDonald's economy and population growth through the first half of the 20th century.
