Magalia was founded in 1853 as a gold mining town named Dogtown. It was later renamed Magalia after the Latin word for cottages. Lumber milling was also a key industry.

Magalia is considered part of the Paradise Ridge and sits at an elevation of around 2,200 feet. The community is surrounded by pine and oak trees within a foothill landscape.
