History
The city of Leavenworth was founded in 1854. It was the first city incorporated in the territory of Kansas. Leavenworth served as one of the starting points for the Oregon Trail and was a major supply point for emigrants heading west. Leavenworth was also an important location during the Bleeding Kansas era in the 1850s when pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces clashed over Kansas' status as a free or slave state. The Leavenworth Constitution, which would have admitted Kansas as a slave state, was drafted in Leavenworth in 1858.
