Las Vegas is a town located in the county of San Miguel in the U.S. state of New Mexico. Its population at the 2010 census was 13,753 and a population density of 678 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 12,826 inhabitants.
The town was created 189 years ago in 1834.
Las Vegas is a city in and the county seat of San Miguel County, New Mexico, United States. Once two separate municipalities, both were named Las Vegas—West Las Vegas and East Las Vegas; they are separated by the Gallinas River and retain distinct characters and separate, rival school districts.
The city lies in the valley of the Rio Grande and is surrounded by desert vegetation. It is located at an altitude of 1,958 m (6,381 ft) above sea level. The landscape around Las Vegas is dominated by desert vegetation such as yucca and creosote bushes.
Las Vegas was founded in 1835 after Mexican government forces defeated American rebels who had been occupying the town. The original name of the settlement was "San Miguel de las Vegas". The town changed its name to "Las Vegas" in 1841 when Antonio Armijo received a Mexican land grant from Alvarado for Rancho San Miguel de Aguayo.
In 1877 a railroad line was built connecting Las Vegas to Paso del Norte (now Ciudad Juárez). In 1905 it was linked to El Paso by a branch line from Anton Chico through Tularosa Basin. The arrival of train service brought people.
