Lancaster's origins were tied to the construction of a canal system that began in 1832 and ended in 1848. Lancaster was incorporated as a village in 1837 and became a city in 1913. It was named after Lancaster, Pennsylvania, by settlers from that area.
In 1803, Lancaster was established by John Korty for settlers from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lancaster was incorporated as a village in 1827 and became a city in 1931.
The first settlement began when Jacob Strawther opened a tavern on what is now South Memorial Drive serving travelers along what would become U.S. Route 40 (now State Route 740). In 1803, John Korty purchased land from Strawther and platted it as town lots with the intent to attract settlers from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
As business grew throughout the 19th century, Lancaster became an important commercial center due to its location at a crossroads along two major highways (US 40/SR 740 and SR 104). In addition to these two main thoroughfares, US 23 runs north-south through downtown Lancaster and US 22 runs east-west along its southern border with Plain City and Pleasant Plain.
Lancaster is home to four institutions of higher education: Ohio University Lancaster (formerly Southern State Community College), Daymar College, DeVry University and Union Institute & University (located at The Park Place).
