The city was created 135 years ago in 1888.

Lakewood is a city located along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado. With a population of over 155,000, it is the fifth most populous city in Colorado and part of the Denver metropolitan area.

History

Lakewood started as several smaller communities like Edgewater and Lakewood that eventually merged. Jefferson County organized the city of Lakewood in 1969 to better manage growth and zoning for the rapidly expanding Denver suburbs.

Lakewood developed quickly throughout the 1970s and 1980s as more residents were attracted to its suburban appeal along the mountain backdrop.
