History
Lakewood started as several smaller communities like Edgewater and Lakewood that eventually merged. Jefferson County organized the city of Lakewood in 1969 to better manage growth and zoning for the rapidly expanding Denver suburbs.
Lakewood developed quickly throughout the 1970s and 1980s as more residents were attracted to its suburban appeal along the mountain backdrop.
