History

Lakeland was first settled in the 1870s during the citrus boom era when rail lines connected central Florida. It was incorporated as a city in 1914.

Citrus and phosphate mining fueled the early economy alongside lumbering and cattle industries. Lakeland later became a popular tourist destination and cultural hub in central Florida.

Today it provides easy access to Tampa metro while retaining its small town charm.
