In 1822, Jackson County was organized by European Americans who had moved into Michigan Territory from Ohio and New York. It was named for Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), general in the War of 1812 and later President of the United States (1829-1837). The settlement that became Jackson was founded in 1823 by Zephaniah Kingsley who built a log cabin on what became known as Kingsley Lake (now Lakeland).
The city also offers residents a vibrant downtown area with many restaurants, shops and businesses that are easily accessible from Interstate 94 and U.S. Route 127 as well as several other major highways that pass through town including M-50 and M-99.
