Hopewell is a city located in the county of Fauquier in the U.S. state of Virginia. Its population at the 2010 census was 22,591 and a population density of 807 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 22,375 inhabitants.

The city was created 110 years ago in 1913.

Hopewell is an independent city located in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area of Virginia. It lies along the James and Appomattox Rivers.

The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes. In 1613, Sir Thomas Dale established the Hopewell settlement, named after his hometown of Hopewell in England.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Hopewell became an important port city known for shipping tobacco, cotton, and coal. The city grew wealthy and prosperous during this time.

In 1915, the DuPont company established a large munitions plant in Hopewell to supply Allied forces in World War I. This sparked further expansion of the city.
