The township was founded in 1765 and incorporated as a township on February 26, 1804. It is named after Hempfield Parish in Lancaster County, England.

Hempfield Township is located approximately 25 miles south of Pittsburgh and is part of the Monongahela Valley region of Pennsylvania. It has been ranked as one of the wealthiest municipalities in America with a median household income of $107,000.
