Hampton has a long history dating back to the early 1600s as an English colonial settlement. It became a thriving port city involved in the maritime trades of fishing, boatbuilding and shipping.
During the Civil War, Hampton was captured by Union forces. Fort Monroe remained a Union stronghold throughout the war and was a refuge for escaped slaves, earning Hampton the nickname of "Freedom's Fortress."
Hampton continued to grow as key military installations were established nearby. It developed into a more diverse city supporting the defense, space, and tourism industries.
