Greenville, Michigan is a city in Montcalm County of the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 8,816 at the 2020 census.
Greenville began as a settlement in 1844 and incorporated as a village in 1858. It was named for its first settler, "Green" Fowler. In 1872, Greenville became an incorporated city after having had its village status revoked by the state legislature.
Early industries included sawmills, brickyards, flour mills, woolen mills and brick kilns, but Greenville's most important industry was agriculture. At one time there were over 100 farms in the area producing wheat, oats and potatoes along with other vegetables such as cabbage and onions which were sold in Detroit or shipped by rail to Chicago markets. These products provided employment for many residents who worked on their own farms or for others nearby.
It is known as the "Gateway to the Thumb", as it lies on M-46 between Flint and Bad Axe, Michigan. Greenville has been home to the annual "Moonshine Festival" since 1971, which celebrates the heritage of making moonshine in this area during Prohibition. There are many sites where people can still see what remains from that era—such as abandoned distilleries and old stills—and even buy some for themselves.
Despite its relatively small size, Greenville has a variety of businesses including restaurants such as Jake's Grill & Pub and Doc's Bar & Grill; stores such as Walmart Supercenter; banks such as First State Bank; grocery stores such as Kroger Marketplace; salons like Salon Q Hair Salon; hotels like Howard Johnson Inn &
