Grady County was created at statehood on November 16, 1907 from Oklahoma Territory land; it was named after Henry W. Grady, an editor of the Atlanta Constitution and Southern orator (1850-1889).
The first townships to be opened for settlement in 1907 were Chickasha and Purcell; others followed soon after such as Coyle and Blanchard. By 1910 most townships had been opened for settlement; however many settlers did not move into their designated area until 1911 due to lack of roads, water wells and other amenities found in more developed areas such as Chickasha and Blanchard which were both established towns before statehood in 1907."
