Goleta is a city in southern Santa Barbara County, California, United States. It was incorporated as a city in 2002, after a long period as the largest unincorporated populated area in the county. As of the 2000 census, the census-designated place had a total population of 55,204.
The area has grown only slightly since then, but it remains the largest unincorporated community in Santa Barbara County by population. It is surrounded on all sides by municipal areas of the City of Santa Barbara (in which its residents vote) and Santa Barbara County (in which they do not). The portion of Goleta west of Storke Road is located within the district boundaries of Carpinteria Unified School District and includes Westmont College (formerly Westmont College).
This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Goleta has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps.
