Fort Lee is a city located in the county of Bergen in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Its population at the 2010 census was 35,345 and a population density of 12,239 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 38,356 inhabitants.
The city was created 120 years ago in 1904.
Fort Lee is a borough at the eastern border of Bergen County, New Jersey, in the United States, situated along the Hudson River atop the Palisades.
The borough's history dates back to 1609 when several settlers, who were fleeing from their home in Manhattan due to conflicts with the Dutch and Native Americans, established an outpost. Fort Lee was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 29, 1904, from portions of Ridgefield Township and Washington Township. The borough was named for George Washington who had headquarters here during the American Revolutionary War.
In 2016, Fort Lee was rated #6 in New Jersey and #22 nationally on "Newsmax" magazine's list of "Top 25 places to live in America", which cited its excellent schools, safe streets and proximity to New York City.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Fort Lee has a total area of , all of it land. The borough's high elevation above sea level (88 meters) makes it susceptible to middle-of-the-night fog throughout much of autumn and wintertime. The lowest temperature recorded within city limits was −14 °F (−26 °C) on February 9, 1934; on January 20, 1982; and February 16.
The borough has been described as "New York City's sixth borough" because it hosts many businesses that are located in Manhattan but have relocated across the river to Fort Lee; this includes entertainment companies such as ABC Studios and HBO.
In 2018, Fort Lee was ranked as the 15th best place to live in New Jersey based on its high quality of life and low cost of living.
