After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 42,062 inhabitants. Its county seat is Fayetteville. The county was created 193 years ago in 1831.

Fayette County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 46,039. Its county seat is Fayetteville. It is part of the Beckley, WV Metropolitan Statistical Area in Southern West Virginia. 

Fayette County was formed in 1831 from parts of Kanawha and Monongalia counties, and named for the Marquis de Lafayette (Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier), a French general who fought in the American Revolutionary War.

The first settlers of European descent arrived in what is now Fayette County around 1750, at a time when Virginia claimed this area as part of its territory. The area that would become known as Fayette County was then part of Greenbrier County (formed 1772), and later became part of Monroe County (formed 1838). In 1856 Monroe County divided into Greenbrier and Pocahontas Counties; Greenbrier's county seat was Lewisburg while Pocahontas' was Marlinton, respectively.

In 1858 voters selected Fayetteville as their new county seat (by a margin of one vote). This led to an election dispute between Lewisburg and Fayetteville;
