Ellis County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 149,610 and a population density of 61 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 191,760 inhabitants. Its county seat is Waxahachie. The county was created 175 years ago in 1849.

Ellis County is located just south of Dallas County in north central Texas. The county was founded in 1849 and named after Richard Ellis, president of the convention that produced the Texas Declaration of Independence.

The city of Waxahachie became the county seat of Ellis County in 1850. Waxahachie was named after the Native American Waxhaw tribe that once lived in the area.
