El Reno is a city located in the county of Canadian in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Its population at the 2010 census was 16,749. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 20,596 inhabitants.
El Reno is a city in and county seat of Canadian County, Oklahoma, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 16,729. The city was begun shortly after the 1889 land rush and named for the nearby Fort Reno. It is located in Central Oklahoma, about 25 miles west of downtown Oklahoma City.
El Reno lies in a region characterized by red-clay hills that once had large herds of bison and elk roaming on them. The city has been called one of America's most beautiful small towns by "Life" magazine (1955). In the 21st century it has become an important center for cattle ranching and farming.
El Reno is home to Oral Roberts University (ORU) and Westminster College, both four-year private institutions that are part of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU). The city has several public schools run by the El Reno Public Schools system. The city also has several private schools.
El Reno was founded after land opened up for settlement following the 1889 Land Rush. It was named for nearby Fort Reno, which was established to protect white settlers from Native Americans after the Land Rush began; it was named for Brigadier General Jesse Linsley Payne, who died during combat against.
